Biography

2020 Jim headshot 017 - Paintings by Artist James Ackerman

My name is James Ackerman. I am an abstract- expressionist artist examining the interaction of lines, shapes and color. My most recent works consist of geometric colored objects moving, breaking and transforming about the canvas. Painting abstracts can be compared to designing and assembling a giant jigsaw puzzle. My paintings usually begin unplanned, sometimes with a general idea or color combination. Then I add and subtract the different elements until they evolve into a more definite composition. Working with acrylics on canvas allows me to make quick changes. Through the relationships of the objects, I aim to reveal hope, encouragement, and perseverance. Wassily Kandinsky and Jackson Pollock strongly influence me, as does the living painter Chuck Hipsher, with his use of broad strokes and splatters of vibrant colors. I was born in Chicago, IL and currently live in Middleton, WI.

You can find more work of mine over at Madison Art Guild.
